Hong Kong Venus Make Historic Debut at PONY 15U Girls World Series

Manila, Philippines – 9 August 2024 – The PONY 2024 Girls Baseball World Series in Manila witnessed a historic moment this week as the Hong Kong Venus took the field for the first time in the 15U Division. Despite a challenging week that ended without a win, the team’s journey from formation to the international diamond marked a significant milestone for girls’ baseball in the region.

The tournament, held from 5 August to 9 August, featured a unique and inspiring storyline: the Hong Kong Venus roster was a blend of talent from Hong Kong, mainland China, and the Philippines. This first-of-its-kind collaboration aimed to showcase the unifying power of sport and develop competitive depth in the region.
The Venus faced a steep learning curve against some of the world's best youth baseball programs.

Tournament Recap:
  • Game 1 (Aug 5): The tournament opener was a tough test against a strong Indonesian side. Hong Kong fought hard but fell to Indonesia 10-3.
  • Game 2 (Aug 6): The team faced the powerhouse Japanese squad, who showcased their trademark precision and speed. Japan claimed an 18-0 victory.
  • Game 3 (Aug 7): The Venus nearly pulled off the upset of the tournament. In a dramatic contest against Team USA, Hong Kong rallied and held a lead for much of the game before falling just short in a heartbreaker, losing 10-9.
  • Game 4 (Aug 8): The rematch against Japan saw a drastically improved defensive performance. Despite holding the Japanese bats quiet for most of the game, Hong Kong was edged out in a low-scoring affair, 2-0.
  • Game 5 (Aug 9): In their final matchup, the Venus faced Indonesia once more. They showed significant improvement from the first game, battling to the end but ultimately falling 8-6.

While the scoreboard showed five losses, the story of the week was the team's growth. The dramatic one-run loss to the USA and the tight 2-0 loss to Japan highlighted the squad's rapid improvement over the course of the five-day tournament.

"It was a mountain of an experience," said a team spokesperson. "Putting together a roster from three different regions in such a short time was a challenge, but seeing them come together as one team in Manila was already a victory. The result against the USA and the way they held Japan to two runs shows the talent we have. This is just the beginning for the Hong Kong Venus."

The Philippines leg of the tournament provided a home-field atmosphere for some of the players, creating a welcoming environment for the mixed roster. The experience is expected to lay the foundation for future collaborations and a stronger girls’ baseball network in Asia.

The Hong Kong Venus may have left Manila without a trophy, but they depart with invaluable experience, a growing bond, and the pride of being pioneers for a new generation of female baseball players in Hong Kong and China.
