Red-hot Hong Kong triumphs in WBSC Hong Kong International Baseball Open 2017 (National Teams Pool)

The 4-day WBSC Hong Kong International Baseball Open 2017 concluded last week in Hong Kong and hometown team Hong Kong did not disappoint by triumphing in the National Teams Pool, while Ateneo Blue Eagles from the Philippines emerged as the worthy-winner in the Club Teams Pool.

A series of changes applied in this year’s tournament, as teams were separated into two pools – the National Teams Pool and the Club Teams Pool, generating more headlines for the competition. Hong Kong won its two round-robin games and then defeated Singapore in the championship game, eventually claiming the National Teams Pool Championship and picking up valuable international ranking points.

In the Club Teams Pool, Ateneo Blue Eagles racked up three wins and then beat Sydney University Baseball Club in the final, becoming the champion of the Club Teams Pool.

On the other note, a young Hong Kong Blue side that competed in the Club Teams Pool only managed to finish fourth in the competition.
